ECON MATTERS
Newsletter of the Dept. of Economics, University of Memphis

"The idea of economists, both when they are right and when they are wrong, are more
powerful than is commonly understood.  Indeed, the world is ruled by little else."

We’re very proud of you and wish you the best.

The Department helped establish a debt counseling service on campus, the Financial Information and Resource Center. In the 18 weeks it was open this academic year, the Center assisted 140 students, faculty and staff who had questions about financial issues. This Center is free and is staffed by volunteers from the Memphis DEBT Collaborative.

Our ODE luncheon was very special this year. Courtesy of the Economic Club of Memphis, Dr. Robert Shiller was our guest speaker. Dr. Shiller is an economics professor at Yale University and is an expert on risk and financial markets. He has written several books, most recently, Irrational Exuberance and The New Financial Order. His presentation focused on the stock market of the 1990’s and how the incorporation of behavioral psychology into economics can broaden our understanding of the fascination with the stock market and its subsequent decline.

Our faculty and students have been very active and have been recognized for their achievements (see “Congratulations”). We are also saying good-bye to two of our colleagues, Dr. Coldwell Daniel, III and Dr. Shelley White-Means (see “Good-Bye”).

The Department continues to exemplify our commitment to our students, our discipline and the community. Through excellent teaching, internationally-recognized scholarship and community partnerships we are fulfilling our vision. I hope everyone has a safe and restful summer. We look forward to the fall semester.
